STUDENT LIFE
Field Studies

At St. Hedwig Catholic School, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door — it expands into the world around us.
Through our Field Studies program, students participate in overnight educational trips designed to deepen their
understanding of academic concepts while also developing confidence, independence, and resilience.
Whether it’s experiencing nature firsthand, learning to be away from home for the first time, or strengthening bonds with classmates, these trips offer students a chance to grow in ways that textbooks can’t teach.
Field Studies help our students discover who they are outside of their comfort zones —
as learners, leaders, and friends.

5th Grade: Astro Camp
Fifth graders spend three unforgettable days at AstroCamp in Idyllwild, CA — a hands-on science and adventure camp focused on space, physics, and the natural world.
Students participate in engaging labs, team-building activities, and outdoor challenges that spark curiosity, build confidence, and foster lasting friendships.

7th Grade: Caritas
Seventh graders attend a five-day retreat at Caritas Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains — a faith-based outdoor experience focused on spiritual growth, environmental stewardship, and community building.
Through reflection, hiking, prayer, and team activities, students deepen their connection to God, one another, and the natural world.

6th Grade: ECOS
Sixth graders spend three days immersed in nature at Emerald Cove Outdoor Science Institute (ECOS) — an enriching, hands-on science experience in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Through outdoor labs, environmental exploration, and team-building challenges, students deepen their understanding of life sciences while developing leadership, independence, and a greater appreciation for God’s creation.

8th Grade: Washington D.C.
Eighth graders cap off their final year with a five-day educational adventure to Washington, D.C. This unforgettable trip brings American history to life as students explore national monuments, government institutions, and cultural landmarks.
Highlights include visits to the U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian museums, Arlington National Cemetery, and more — all while deepening their appreciation for citizenship, leadership, and the legacy of our nation.
