STUDENT LIFE
Library
At Saint Hedwig School, our library is more than a collection of books—it’s a place where students discover new worlds, explore their interests, and grow a lifelong love of reading. With over 5,500 titles and engaging programs like Accelerated Reader, Passports to Reading, and Celebrate with Books, our library supports students from TK through 8th grade on their reading journey. Guided by a dedicated full-time librarian, students receive personalized support and encouragement, making the library a vibrant center of learning and imagination on campus.

A Living History
Our collection began in 1965, when The Jungle Book was the very first book checked out on March 3. Since then, our library has grown and evolved into a vibrant resource center for every grade level.
Our Collection
Today, we proudly house more than 5,500 books, with new titles added each week. Older, unused books are thoughtfully retired to make room for fresh stories and resources. Students can explore:
- Nonfiction & Fiction
- EZ Readers (early chapter books)
- Picture Books & Graphic Novels
- Biographies & Saints
- Popular book series across all levels
Accelerated Reader (AR)
Accelerated Reader (AR) is designed to motivate independent reading and build a lifelong love of books.
After reading a book within their reading level, students take a short quiz focused on factual recall. While our core Language Arts curriculum develops higher-level thinking skills like inference and analysis, AR supports reading fluency and comprehension through consistent practice.
Every book is leveled for the Accelerated Reader (AR) program, guiding students in grades 2–8 to choose books that match their reading level and comprehension goals.
Library Classes & Access
- TK & Kindergarten: Storytime twice a month
- Grades 1–5: Weekly library sessions
- Middle School: Open library during recess for reading, studying, and checkouts
- Open Library: Available to grades 1–8 every morning recess, plus Mondays and Fridays at lunch
Special Programs
- Passports to Reading
- Students in grades 2–8 are encouraged to “travel” through new genres and series, broadening their horizons and discovering new favorites.
- Celebrate with Books
- Families can honor a child’s birthday with a $25 donation. During their birthday week, the student selects a brand-new book, is the first to check it out, and a personalized dedication plate is placed inside for lasting recognition.
