5th grade: Newport Seabase

Journey to the Ocean Academics is a hands-on science program based on CA Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. With grade specific activities designed to enhance traditional classroom learning, your students are bound for success. Engaging and hands-on STEM & marine-based activities including microscope investigation, plankton tows, crab catching, mini boat design and race, pontoon boat rides, and more!

 

6th grade:  Emerald Cove Outdoor Science Institute (ECOS) in the San Bernardino Mountains, near Running Springs.

Experiencing natural phenomena at ECOS Institute sparks students’ curiosity and engages real-world learning and applications. As students explore and understand science and nature, they develop new interests, build new skills, and learn about possible careers. Working as a team accomplishes the true intent of NGSS: to think critically and communicate as a scientist and informed citizen.

 

7th grade: CYO Caritas Camp

Caritas Creek is a Catholic inspired outdoor education retreat center in the California redwoods near Occidental, CA. Caritas is managed by the Caritas Creek CYO Foundation, and is a recognized Catholic education resource staffed with fully certified and degreed counselors and naturalists.

Caritas integrates outdoor science based learning experiences, character and moral development with a Catholic curriculum. Students will be academically challenged in a supportive environment and experience opportunities for growth, create lasting bonds, and enjoy God’s creation. The retreat is a capstone to the science education and religious instruction they have been engaged with at St. Hedwig School.

Some of the highlights of this 5-day retreat include five primary hikes, (including an excursion to Bodega Bay); small group discussions; moral development activities; camp electives (archery, arts and crafts, sports, and others); classroom meetings; campfire; and closing ceremony.

 

 

8th grade: Washington D.C.

Our eighth grade class will have the opportunity to visit the nation’s capital. This field trip provides one of the most diverse educational experiences for students by bringing history and culture to life through the many sites, activities, and attractions the capital has to offer. From the monuments and documents that represent the ideals of the Founding Fathers to the memorials honoring our soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, visiting the sights of Washington, D.C. puts students at the heart of the American experience giving them a deeper appreciation and understanding of the ideas and events that have shaped our great nation.

Students will explore the Smithsonian Museums and various historical sites such as the U.S. Capitol building, the National Archives, the Library of Congress, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.
