Writing Program

The Schoolwide Writing Program is a comprehensive writing program, scaffolding instruction from Grades K-8. This program, based on the UCI writing program, has developed consistency among both grade level classrooms and has established growth from one grade to the next based on the California State Standards and the Common Core standards.  Summative assessments at the end of each writing unit are used to measure growth and establish consistency.  By eighth grade, students are able to write expository research papers using MLA formatting guidelines, including in-text citations and a works cited page.

Highlights of the program:

  • Students learn to express thoughts in four different genres:   Narrative, Expository, Persuasive, and Descriptive Writing
  • Students utilize the Writing Process: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing
  • Students organize thoughts with graphic organizers and thinking maps
  • Students employ grammar skills to express thoughts clearly
